Band

New Haven, August 21st 2012

Welcome!

As Band Director at John C Daniels, it is my pleasure to invite you to be part of this wonderful program. John C Daniels Concert Band is possible thanks to the support of Mrs. Johnson and JDC staff, Music in Schools Initiative at Yael School of Music and the Yale Class of ’57.

What is John C Daniels Concert Band?

Our Concert Band is an ensemble of 26 students from 5th to 8th grade who have been accepted by audition and have been attending rehearsals daily. The auditions for 2012-2013 will be held at JCD in October and rehearsals will be everyday (Monday to Friday) from 8:15am to 8:55am. There is another audition later during the year, January, for the students who have demonstrated interest and progress.

What are JCD CB activities?

Every year we have several Concerts: Christmas Concert, 2 Spring Concerts and two monthly concerts, one of our traditions at JCD: Rise & Shine Café. It happens every other Friday at 8:30am in the first floor Hall beside the Gym.

What are the regulations of the JCD CB?

The Band has the same regulations that rule every single activity at the school.

How do students receive their grade?

The grades are the result of three different factors: Attendance, homework and private practice, progress in private lessons and rehearsals.

What will the School offer?

The school will provide an instrument for the students to practice at home, to rehearse and play in concerts. A place to rehearse and an encouraging environment to help the children to develop in the very best way their talent.

What is requested from the families?

The students will pay a $25 dollars annual maintenance fee. New students will receive an instrument after the second month of classes prior the payment of the maintenance fee and the audition. The music books cost $10 dollars (Percussion books $25). Families can buy additional elements as mouthpieces for brass and reeds for woodwinds (clarinet, saxophone, oboe, bassoon) in any of the stores listed at the end.

What is the band program promise?

To provide free private lessons taught by the Music in Schools Initiative Teaching Artists during the year. This is a group of professional students, who are finest performers and passionate musicians. They will teach your children to play the instrument they were assigned to and will be a possitive role model and an example of hard work, perseverance and excellence for your kids. Teaching Artists could guide the families too in the process of buying and instrument for their children.

What is the families promise?

Families have to bring their children from Monday to Friday from 8:15am to 8:55am. Giving them a place and a time at home to practice.

What if the student is dismissed from the band program?

There are two main reasons why the students are dismissed from our program: family decision with parents/guardian authorization or for breaking the school regulations: absences, bad behavior, to fail in their academic responsibilities (rehearsals, concerts, private lessons) bad attitude, etc. When it happens the students will go to the general music class but they will get a bad grade for the making period when they were dismissed.

What other activities must consider the band students?

The band students must participate, as part of their music education process, in the CMEA Competition (Connecticut Music Educators Association). These auditions are held on 1st December in Meriden CT. If accepted, your children will be part of the CMEA Festival Ensembles: Concert Band, or Orchestra, or Jazz Band the 1st and 2nd March 2013.

What other additional activities are offered for the band students?

During Spring Semester there are several special activities Saturdays for the NHPS music students. The All City Honors Ensembles: Concert Band (winds and percussion), Orchestra (Strings) and Chorus (voice). These activities are free and rehearsals will be at Yale University under the supervision of YSM Faculty members and assisted by Music in Schools Initiative Teaching Artists. The auditions for these ensembles will be from December 3rd to December 8th. It is an online application with the approval of the Band Director and the parents/guardians. The final concert for these ensembles are the first week of May 2013.

Later in May 2013 we have Yale Solo Competition. A competition in three different categories (4th-5th, 6th-8th and High School) for the best NHPS music students. It will be held at Sprague Memorial Hall - Yale School of Music. The judges are YSM Faculty members and guest form other institutions. The application is online with the approval of the Band Director.

What about Summer?

Finally, from July 29th to August 23rd 2013, we will have Morse Summer Music Academy. A free summer camp for NHPS music students. It is an intense 4 weeks musical training where the students will have: two concerts weekly at Sprague Memorial Hall, private lesson, Concert band, String Orchestra, Hearing class, Chamber Music Ensemble, Conducting, Jazz band, technology, piano, composition, improvisation seminars, YSM Faculty members’ master classes, and much more. Applications are online during March and auditions will be held last week of April.
