In 8th grade reading, we just finished a unit on fiction. We read the novel Slumming by Kristen D. Randle which is a book about three high school students and the many issues that they face as teens. We explored character, conflict, setting, and theme and how these literary elements contributed to the novel. We also worked on skills such has making text connections and summarizing to make us stronger readers! In writing, the 8th grade wrote a literary analysis. They had to identify various story elements such as setting, character, and theme and evaluate how these elements affected the story.
Next semester, the 8th grade will explore reading non-fiction through the novel Getting Away with Murder: The True Story of the Emmett Till Case. This is the true story of a young African-American boy who was wrongly killed in Mississippi in 1955. This novel brings to the light the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. In writing, we will be writing a persuasive essay on a controversial topic.
Please make sure that all 8th graders are reading every night and filling out their reading logs. If you have any questions about the curriculum or your student's progress, please feel free to contact me at

Dear Parents,
Due to some technical difficulties that have been since ironed out on our school website, I would like to explain the wonderful things that have been happening in your child(s) mathematics classes. As you may already know, the 1st marking period will come to a close Friday, November 2nd. Your child will have an individual conference with me some time next week to explain their grade and how it can improve.
Throughout the 1st marking period all 7th/8th graders have been studying algebraic concepts and number sense. The students have been working incredibly hard in preparation for their 1st district assessment which will occur on Wednesday, November 14th through Thursday November 15th. I am confident that our 7th-8th graders will perform well on this 1st assessment and will continue their efforts into the 2nd marking period. Homework continues to be a cause for concern and has been addressed daily in classes
We have finally received our quotes for the Washington D.C. trip and we will be sending out an informational letter, as well as, payment options and deadlines. We will also factor in Holiday Hill and Caps and Gowns in this price plan. Now that the website is up and running I will be posting information when it becomes available to me. If you need to contact me for any reason please do so at

Parents/Guardians,
Welcome to the 7th/8th Mathematics page! Due to technical issues the site had previously not been working. However, it has been fixed.
As the first marking begins to wind down I would like to update some of the things we have been covering. All 7th and 8th grade rs have taken the DCMT district math assessment. They will also take the same assessment in early June to see how much growth has been made since September.
In Unit 1, marking period 1, all 7th and 8th grade students have been learning about algebraic concepts which encompass solving and writing algebraic equations and expressions. Students have also solved 1, 2, and multi-step equations with variables on both sides. We are currently preparing for our 1st district assessment which will be given November 12-13th. Students in 7th and 8th will have their next quiz Monday, November 5th for all classes.
Now that the site is up and running I will update any information and assignments each night so that both parents and students can check for the types of assignments given. Students can also check the site if they have forgotten the homework assignments or the dates of important tests/quizzes.
The 7th and 8th grade team has been given prices for our Washington D.C. trip for 8th grade. We couldn't give out any information prior because we hadn't receive the price of the trip. Parents will be given a letter with payments options, as well as, opportunities for fund raising to help reduce the cost.
Students are allowed to stay after-school for extra-help and test/quiz re-takes on Tues-Thurs as long as I receive a note from a parent/guardian for pick-up. Parents are also encouraged to email teachers regarding students grades and behaviors.
If there are any questions/concerns please email me at
