First Grade parents and guardians,
Thank you to all the parents who have taken time out of their busy schedules to meet with the teachers and go over the progress the children are making. First grade has shown to be easier for some students and harder for others. We are all working through this challenge. Please continue to work at home with your child and feel free to email, come in, call or write a note to discuss concerns or specific needs of your child.

Shared Reading
Our students have been working on comprehension this week. We have begun to decode higher level books, yet are not paying attention to what those words are telling us. The students need to read a couple of pages stop and think about what just happened. If they are unable to tell what just happened, they need to re read to understand, This strategy is very important for the students to improve their reading. Reading has 2 parts: decoding and comprehension. Students need both to be on grade level
Read Aloud
During read aloud, we are reading a story Flat Stanley. In this story the little boy has something fall on him while he is sleeping and he becomes flat. While we read this story I show strategies of thinking while reading. We have trouble at 5, 6, and 7 years old being able to think about what is happening while we are reading, This action of wondering, or noticing, or picturing or questioning will help us become better readers and be able to comprehend the text.
Writing
We started a unit on letter writing. The students have been applying the 5 components of letters: date, greeting, body, closing and signature. We have written letters to Shaw’s for donating bags to make our Halloween costumes. We also wrote letters to the king of England. We pretended to be Pilgrims who wanted to go to the new world since the king was telling them what religion they had to practice. The students are doing very well with using each part of a letter.
Math
We have moved from addition to subtraction. We have been using the number bonds to find the missing number and writing subtraction sentences to go with these number bonds. Number stories (word problems) are also something that we have been practicing. These subtraction stories are much more difficult for the students. Please be sure to practice math facts at home as well as doing the math homework and reading homework every night.
