Hello!

Happy almost spring!! Today we have been in school for 106 days! Can you believe it?

We have been reading a lot and learning about butterflies, plants and more recently about animals and the different noises they make. We have been comparing and contrasting during Shared Reading.

In writing, we are continuing our unit on descriptive paragraphs. The students used their senses to describe their settings. The students also wrote about a character and this week we're writing about an event. We will be using a graphic organizer to help organize ideas.

Please feel free to stop by and ask to view your child's writing folder or work in progress.

In Math, we reviewed kilograms and grams to prepare for the test tomorrow and on Wednesday we begin our unit on volume.

Please make sure your child goes on Reflex Math at home for at least 3x a week for no less than 30 minutes each time.

Also, please send in your change to help us reach our $100 goal. We're still $20 short!!!

Help us help others.

If you would like more information as to where the money goes, please see Ms. Wright.

Thanks:)

Mrs. Ortiz

Dec.14-Dec21

Hello families,

I hope you all had a great time at the Ziti dinner and at the holiday concert/town meeting. The students worked hard and have learned a lot about how other countries celebrate Christmas.

Next Thursday, Dec. 20th we'll have our Christmas lunch with the the children. Thank you to those who have responded about bringing in a food item. Remember it needs to be peanut-free. The luncheon is for students only, please do not bring other siblings; there is just not enough room in the classroom to accomadate more kids!

Today the children take their chpater 4 test on adding and subtracting using bar models and solving two-step problems. The kids are doing well but extra-practice at home with re-grouping can help.

I hope you and your family have a very happy holiday and New Year.

Remember to have your kids read over vacation:)

Hello!

Can you believe we've been in school for 38 days? The children are doing well and we're proud of them. Remember to send your child in with a blue sweater to wear throughout the day. The students are doing well with homework and their math facts. Keep reading and practicing at home.

On Friday. Dec. 7th we'll be going to the Shubert Theater to watch the Nutcracker. The cost of the trip is $10. We'e looking for 5 chaperones to accompany us on the trip and the cost is $10. Please look for a notice in your child's bag next week.

On Friday, we'll have our math chapter 2 test in adding in the ones and tens. Next week, we'll begin subtracting beginning without regrouping and then moving into regrouping in the ones and tens.

In writing, we continue our letter writing unit. Students are learning to pick an audience, a purpose for writing and voice in their writing.

In literacy, we are working on predictions, connections, sequencing, setting and non-fiction text features. We have begun small group instruction and please be aware of books that may go home in addition to their daily reading.

Room 162 is going to visit the firehouse on Whitney. Please make sure you sign and return the permission slip. No child will attend the trip without a signed slip.

Hello!

Although we had a day off last week, the students worked very hard!

In Math this week, we will continue with chapter 1, working on place value and counting up to 1,000. We will be having a chapter test on Tuesday, October 9th. In addition to their daily homework, the students will also be receiving a math facts paper to do as extra homework on Tuesday and Thursday. This will help with their addition and subtraction fluency.

The standards that we will be focusing on in Literacy this week are, Craft and Structure #5 and Integration of Knowledge and Ideas #7. We will also be working on reading fluency throughout the week.

In Writing, we will continue with our "All About Me" books. We will be using graphic organizers to help the students organize their thoughts and ideas. They will be using these orgnaizers to put their ideas into writing.

We can now confirm that the dates for the Firehouse visit on Whitney Ave. will be October 9th for room 162, and October 18th for room 161. We will need only one parent chaperone for this trip seeing as the firehouse is not large enough to accomodate more.

We will be walking to Tower One on Wednesday, October 3rd, to celebrate the Jewish Harvest Sukkot. We will be leaving at 11:30 am and returning at 1:00 pm. The students will eat lunch and watch a magician there; parents are invited to join us.

Thank you!

Mrs. Ortiz and Miss Brodach

Hello,

This was a short week but lots of work has been accomplished.

Today we had the NED show, which means never give up, encourage others and do the right thing. Yoyo's will be sold next week prices and range from $6- $15.

We also had our first fire drill and your children did a great job getting out of the building safely and quietly.

Next week there is no school on Wednesday in observance of Yom Kippur.

In Math, we will continue with chapter 1 Counting up to 1,000 and Place Value: hundreds, tens and ones.

In Literacy, we will continue working on our Magnet theme: The World In Our Backyard-Communities The standards from the CCSS that will be our focus are: Literature #'s 1 and 2 in Keys and Details, #7 Integration of Knowledge and Ideas and #5 Craft and Structure.

In Writing, we will continue with our "All About Me" books. We will continue to use graphic organizers to organize our ideas as well as adding details to our writing.

The dates for the Firehouse visit on Whitney Ave. is Oct.18 room 161 and Oct, 19 162. The bus has not been approved yet so I can't confirm these dates.

For this trip only one parent chaperone is needed as the firehouse/station is not large enough to accommodate more.

Thanks for your understanding,

Mrs. Ortiz and Miss Brodach
