In 7th grade reading, we just finished a unit on fiction. We read the novel Wringer by Jerry Spinelli which is about a boy who has a pet pigeon in a town that kills pigeons for fun. We explored character, point of view, and conflict and how these literary elements contributed to the novel. We also worked on skills such as predicting and summarizing to become stronger readers. In writing, the 7th grade wrote a short story. We included similes, metaphors, dialogue, and imagery to make our short stories come to life!
Next semester, the 7th grade will explore reading non-fiction through the novel Phineas Gage. This is the true story of a man who had an iron rod go through his brain! In writing, we will be writing a persuasive speech on a controversial topic and having an in-class debate! I look forward to hearing the student's different points of view!
Please make sure that all 7th graders are reading every night and filling out their reading logs. If you have any questions about the curriculum or your student's progress, please feel free to contact me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. 1st Quarter District Assessment

Wednesday and Thursday, November 7-8

2nd Marking Period

Unit: Cells

During this unit students will discover that cells are the basic building blocks of life and each cell carries out life processes utilizing some common structures. These structures perform specific functions within the cell and function together to support life. Furthermore, cells come in many shapes and sizes and that cells have many different functions. Different types of cells have different organelles depending on the complexity of the cell. That all cells contain chromosomes that carry information needed to control the activities of the cell, to make new cells and new organisms. In addition, these cells reproduce through either mitosis or meiosis. These two different types of cell division have some similarities and differences depending on the type of cell that is dividing.

Standards:

  • C15. Describe the basic structures of an animal cell, including nucleus, cytoplasm, mitochondria and cell membrane, and how they function to support life.
  • C25. Explain the similarities and differences in cell division in somatic and germ cells.
  • CINQ6. Use appropriate tools and techniques to make observations and gather data.
  • CINQ7. Identify and present relationships between variables in appropriate graphs.

Dear Parents,
Due to some technical difficulties that have been since ironed out on our school website, I would like to explain the wonderful things that have been happening in your child(s) mathematics classes. As you may already know, the 1st marking period will come to a close Friday, November 2nd. Your child will have an individual conference with me some time next week to explain their grade and how it can improve.
Throughout the 1st marking period all 7th/8th graders have been studying algebraic concepts and number sense. The students have been working incredibly hard in preparation for their 1st district assessment which will occur on Wednesday, November 14th through Thursday November 15th. I am confident that our 7th-8th graders will perform well on this 1st assessment and will continue their efforts into the 2nd marking period. Homework continues to be a cause for concern and has been addressed daily in classes
We have finally received our quotes for the Washington D.C. trip and we will be sending out an informational letter, as well as, payment options and deadlines. We will also factor in Holiday Hill and Caps and Gowns in this price plan. Now that the website is up and running I will be posting information when it becomes available to me. If you need to contact me for any reason please do so at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
Regards,
Mr. LaRovera
