Math Update

Hello Parents!

Each week I will be posting about what we have done or are going to do in Math.  I will also post tips to help your child with the skills we are learning as well as when we will have chapter tests.

This year we (room 157)are excited to be working in a workshop model for math.  This means that we are working mostly in small groups.  Groups are formed by what skills each student needs to work on.  We are learning through exploration with manipulatives and fun games.  We have all really enjoyed this new setup for math.  Ask your child to tell you about math time!

So far we have already finished Chapter 1:  Numbers to 10.  Unfortunately, I was unable to blog about this chapter because our website was down :(.  In chapter 1 we reviewed counting objects, learned how to compare groups using the vocabulary same, more, less/fewer.  We took our first chapter test about a week ago and I am very proud of how well the students did!

We then moved onto chapter 2 (we are finishing it today!!):  Number bonds.  We learned what a number bond is, and how to add using the number bond (part-part-whole).  We have also been working hard on finding the missing number within a number bond by counting on.  We used:  rekenreks, number lines, connecting cubes, counting bears and 100 charts to help us manipulate the numbers.

We will have our chapter 2 test on FRIDAY (9/29)!

Room 157:  English

Room 158:  Spanish

We do our very best to alternate the tests in each language.  Example:  for chapter 3, room 157 will take it in Spanish and room 158 will take it in English.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to me!  Please remember to have your child complete his/her homework each night.  Homework is a part of your child's math grade!
