Welcome to Thanksgiving week!! Thank you to all of the families that came to pick up your child's report card last week. I was very excited to see all of you and to discuss your student's progress in the year so far. Many students made honors and high honors!! Way to go 6th grade!!

There are just a few announcements for this week:

  • Due to the short week, there will be no homework!! Students should still at least read 30 minutes each night. 
  • Teacher VS. Student Volleyball game - Wednesday, November 22, 2017 (9:30 - 10:30 AM)

           *Students are asked to bring $1.00 as admission into the game (Half of the money raised will go to the 

             Connecticut Food Bank and the other half will go towards field day in the spring)*

Welcome to Report Card Week!! I am so excited to see all of my parents to discuss your child's progress so far! All of the 6th grade students have made so much progress during the First Marking Period. I can't wait to see what the rest of the year has in store for each and every one of them!! Report Card Conferences will take place on Wednesday, November 15, 2017 from 1:30-5:30 PM.

Here are the lessons for this week:

Language Arts-Week of November 13, 2017:

In Reading, students will begin to read a variety of non-fiction articles and texts. They will begin the book, The Great Fire. This book is about the great Chicago fire that took place in 1871. It was one of the most colossal disasters in American history. This week students will also wrap up their fiction "Book Clubs" as they begin to prepare to form non-fiction "Book Clubs". In these newly formed "Book Clubs", student will read articles about events in history that they are interested in.

In Writing, students will begin to discuss Expository writing. Students will learn about non-fiction text features and how they can include these features in their writing. Students will also learn why authors write non-fiction. They will choose an event  in history that they are interested in to start researching about. These topics will include, but not limited to: World War I or II, the Holocaust, the Cold War, the Civil War, the American Revolution, Civil Rights Movement, the Titanic, etc.


Homework for this week:

  • Daily Reading Log
  • Students will answer a different question each day (Monday-Character's Speech, Tuesday-Character's Thoughts, Wednesday-Character's Actions, AND Thursday-Summary)
  • Parents must sign one time on the back of the paper.
  • Homework is due: Friday, November 17, 2017

Welcome to the first full week in November! I hope everyone enjoyed a fun and safe Halloween with their children and families! Thank you to Ms. O'Shea and all of the Pre-K through 2nd grade students and teachers on the Halloween parade. It was definitely a treat!! All of the students and teachers looked great!! The 6th graders really loved seeing all of the little ones dressed up!!

Here are the lessons for this week:

Language Arts-Week of November 6, 2017:

In Reading, students are working on analyzing characters, setting and events in the book, The Skin I'm In. This week, students will be working on comparing and contrasting 2 characters in the book. Students will practice these skills during independent reading, in small groups, and during "Book Clubs" using a book they have chosen.

In Writing, students are starting the new unit, Expository Writing. Students will choose a topic that they are interested in to write about. This should be related to science or social studies. This week, students will be learning about text features related to non-fiction texts and articles.

  • Tuesday, November 7, 2017 - NO SCHOOL for students (Teacher Professional Day)
  • Friday, November 10, 2017 - NO SCHOOL (Veteran's Day)
  • Thursday, November 9, 2017 - Town Meeting (1:15 PM for grades 5-8)


Homework for this week:

  • "Book Clubs"
  • Students will read the assigned pages/chapters in their choosen book.
  • Students will take notes (using sticky notes) on their focus chosen by their group.

Welcome to the last full week in October and the last week of the 1st Marking Period! I hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful weekend with family and friends! A huge "shout out" to all of the students (and parents) who participated last Thursday for the Hispanic Heritage Celebration. It was a great show!! I can tell the students (and teachers) really worked hard!! Kuddos to everyone involved!!

Here are the lessons for this week:

Language Arts- Week of October 23, 2017:

In Reading, students will be learning about theme, plots and interaction of characters using the book: The Skin I'm In. The students will then practice these skills during independent reading, small group instruction and "Book Clubs". 

In Writing, students will finish up their personal narratives about a significant life event that taught them a valuable life lesson. This week, students will peer edit with a partner and then revise their final draft to be handed in for a grade. Final drafts are due: Friday, October 27, 2017.


Homework for this week:

  • "Cereal Box" Book Reports
  • Students must read for AT LEAST 30-45 minutes EVERY night.
  • Students should work on one (1) part of the book report EACH night.
  • Book Reports are due on: Friday, October 27, 2017

  • Monday, October 23, 2017 - Early dismissal for students only - 12:50 PM (NO AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM)

Welcome to a beautiful Autumn week. The weather is cooler and fall activities are fully underway!! I hope everyone enjoyed a relaxing weekend. 

Here are the lessons for this week in Language Arts:

Language Arts- Week of October 16, 2017:

In Reading, students will be working on plots, subplots and theories about characters. I will model these skills using the CORE novel, The Skin I'm In.  Students will then practice these skills independently, with a partner, and in "Book Clubs" using a book of their choice.

In Writing, students have finished the prewriting part of their personal narratives about a significant life event. This week they will be typing their rough drafts on Google Docs and peer editing with a partner. Next week, they will fix up their rough drafts and print out a final copy for a grade. Final copies are due: Friday, October 27, 2017.


Homework for this week:

  • "Cereal Box" Book Report
  • Students will need a cereal box (any size), glue and scissors
  • COVER all sides of cereal box (Front of the box MUST be covered with a white sheet of paper and colored-I can supply white paper if needed.)
  • Book reports are due: Friday, October 27, 2017


In Other News:

  • Monday, October 23, 2017 - Early Dismissal for students (NO afterschool program this day.)
  • Friday, October 27, 2017 - End of the 1st Marking Period
