Welcome to a brand new week! I hope everyone had a well-rested weekend! The count down is on to Christmas!! I am sure everyone is excited. The students are definitely excited and unfortunately, this is showing in their behavior, classwork and homework! Please be aware that homework is given everyday and will continue to be given, even the week leading up to Christmas. Please check that your child is keeping up with their homework and remember to sign their "Reading Log".

Here are the lessons for this week:

Language Arts-Week of December 4, 2017:

In Reading, students are working on the book: The Great Chicago FireThey are learning about the Chicage Fire of 1871 through this book, articles, video clips and audio clips. They are working in groups of 4 or 5 to figure out the main idea and supporting details in non-fiction articles. They will also be working in "Non-fiction Book Clubs" based on a topic they are interested in learning more information about.

In Writing, students will begin to make a list on topics they feel they are experts on. They will choose one of these topics to begin to research about. They will use books, articles, the internet and video/audio clips to take notes on their topic. Students will be using "Cornell Notes" to take all of their notes while doing research. This week we will visit the library Monday, Wednesday and Friday to begin our research. *Students can use the same topic for writing that they are working on in their "Book Clubs".

Homework for this week:

  • 6th grade Reading Log
  • Students read for at least 30 minutes everyday.
  • Students will answer a different question each day (character's speech, character's thoughts, character's actions and summary)
  • Parents will sign reading logs.
  • Reading Logs are due: Friday, December 8, 2017.
