Welcome to a brand new week! I hope everyone had a well-rested weekend! The count down is on to Christmas!! I am sure everyone is excited. The students are definitely excited and unfortunately, this is showing in their behavior, classwork and homework! Please be aware that homework is given everyday and will continue to be given, even the week leading up to Christmas. Please check that your child is keeping up with their homework and remember to sign their "Reading Log" everynight.

Here are the lessons for this week:

Language Arts-Week of December 4, 2017:

In Reading, students are working on the book: Hana's SuitcaseThey are learning about the Holocaust through this book, articles, and audio clips. This is a very deep topic, and it will only be presented on a 5th grade level. At the end of this unit, the students will have the opportunity to meet a real Holocaust survivor.

In Writing, students will begin to make a list on topics they feel they are experts on. They will choose one of these topics to begin to research about. They will use books, articles, the internet and video/audio clips to take notes on their topic. Students will be introduced to using "Cornell Notes".

Homework for this week:

  • 5th grade Reading Log
  • Students read for at least 30 minutes everyday.
  • Students will write down 3 new or interesting vocabulary words.
  • They will write a summary each day.
  • Parents will sign reading logs everynight.
  • Reading Logs are due: Friday, December 8, 2017.

In Other News:

  • Tuesday, December 12, 2017 - Annual Ziti Dinner  (5:30 - 7:00 PM)

*The raffles will be done differently this year. Each student is being asked to donate one (1) item to a  "themed basket" for their grade level. 5th grade's basket is "The Love of Books". Therefore, students can donate a book, book marks, writing journals, a small bedside reading light, etc. Please email me if you have any questions. Thank you in advance for your support.*
